According to Zhu Zengyong of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, China's pork consumption will not see significant growth in the near future. A hike in demand had previously modernised hog farms, but recent economic struggles led to a downturn, causing price drops amid a surplus.

Zhu emphasized during a seminar that the current demand remains stable, advising companies against increasing breeding sow capacity. Instead, businesses should concentrate on cost reductions and enhancing breeding efficiency.

In response, Beijing lowered the national breeding sow retention target and imposed regulations on pig production capacity. The shift comes as pig prices face continued pressure, with further declines in pork imports expected, signifying ongoing challenges in the industry.
