India's Ethanol Ambition: Towards a Greener Future

India aims to increase ethanol blending with petrol to over 20%, spearheaded by a committee under NITI Aayog. With 19.6% already achieved, the goal is nearly met. The focus also includes green hydrogen adoption and efforts to reach net-zero fossil fuel production by 2045 under energy sector expansion.

India is making significant strides in its goal to blend more than 20% ethanol with petrol, as revealed by Petroleum Minister Hardeep S Puri. Currently, the country has already achieved a 19.6% blending rate.

The initiative, overseen by a NITI Aayog committee, aims to enhance the nation's energy profile and reduce dependence on fuel imports, which cost around USD 150 billion annually. Puri emphasized the vital role of green hydrogen in achieving a cleaner energy future.

India is set to increase its fossil fuel consumption to 6.5-7 million barrels per day shortly, aiming for a USD 7-10 trillion economy with enhanced hydrocarbon exploration and production strategies.
