Renaming Najafgarh: Delhi Assembly's Push for Historical Change

BJP MLA Neelam Pehalwan proposed renaming Delhi's Najafgarh as 'Nahargarh' in honor of King Nahar Singh. In a significant move, BJP MLA Neelam Pehalwan, representing Najafgarh, advocated for renaming the area to 'Nahargarh' during a session in the Delhi Assembly on Thursday. In conversations with the press, Pehalwan noted, "I addressed the issue of Najafgarh in the Assembly, proposing a change to 'Nahargarh' to honor our legacy."

Pehalwan underlined the intent behind the renaming as a tribute to King Nahar Singh. "I've seized this first opportunity to propose renaming Najafgarh to accurately reflect its history and pay homage to our king," she declared in her address to the Assembly. The proposal claims Mughal ruler Aurangzeb altered the area's name and seeks its restoration.

In her address before the Assembly, Pahalwan emphasized Najafgarh's rural roots and its proximity to Haryana, recounting the struggles under Mughal ruler, Emperor Shah Alam II. Highlighting Raja Nahar Singh's pivotal role in the 1857 revolution, she argued for the restoration of the region's historical name due to its significance and the endured oppression.

In what appears a broader campaign for historical restoration, RK Puram MLA Anil Sharma also put forth a proposal to rename Mohammadpur to Madhavpur, further stirring discussions on cultural heritage in the Delhi Assembly.
