An Air India flight bound for Delhi from Chicago was forced to make an unexpected return to its departure point after encountering severe plumbing issues. The decision followed reports of clogged lavatories, as crew members discovered improper waste disposal was the culprit.
Authorities at Chicago O'Hare International Airport, where Flight AI126 originated, stated that items such as polythene bags, rags, and clothes had been flushed, leading to multiple lavatories being rendered unusable. With eight out of twelve lavatories compromised, the situation quickly escalated.
The decision to divert back to Chicago was made in light of night operation restrictions at European airports. Passengers were assured of support, including hotel stays and assistance with rebooking their onward travel. Air India has urged passengers to use lavatories correctly to prevent future incidents.
