In a dramatic demonstration of grievance, approximately 15 onion farmers ascended a water tank in Nashik on Monday, voicing their dissatisfaction over the declining prices of onions—a vital kitchen staple.
The protest unfolded at Lasalgaon's Agriculture Produce Market Committee (APMC), Asia's largest wholesale onion market. Farmers highlighted a drop of Rs 300-500 in onion prices within just five days, reaching Rs 1,700 per quintal for red onions and Rs 1,800 for the summer crop. In response, farmers have halted auctions, pressing for the removal of the Minimum Export Price (MEP) on onions.
The disturbance concluded following a promise from state agriculture minister Manikrao Kokate that Yeola MLA Chhagan Bhujbal would bring up their concerns in the ongoing Budget Session of the legislature. Authorities were quick to respond, ensuring peace and order were maintained.
