Uttarakhand's Green Leap: Challenges and Solutions

The state's pioneering effort to calculate 'Gross Environment Product' underscores its commitment to a sustainable future.

During a seminar on 'Climate Change and Renewable Energy--Challenges and Solutions' at the Wadia Institute, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami underscored the pressing global issue of climate change. Reflecting on the previous summer's unusually high temperatures in mountainous regions, he called for increased awareness and action on climate issues.

The Chief Minister highlighted several initiatives to combat climate change, including the 'Hariyali Mission,' which aims to plant millions of saplings across the state. Additionally, the 'Jal Shakti Abhiyan' targets the revival of ponds and traditional water sources in 1,000 villages, promoting crucial water conservation efforts.

Emphasizing innovative strategies, Dhami noted the establishment of the Spring and River Rejuvenation Authority and the Glacier Study Centre with Wadia Institute's support. Uttarakhand also hosted the 38th National Games, themed 'Green Games,' and spearheaded India's first Gross Environment Product (GEP) index, a novel metric for environmental valuation.
