Massive Refunds Issued to Sahara Depositors Amid Transparency Overhaul

The government has disbursed Rs 2,314.20 crore to 1,297,111 Sahara Group depositors, as reported on February 28, 2025. This follows a Supreme Court order and involves a digital claim portal launched for refund processing. The operation is overseen by Justice R Subhash Reddy and Gaurav Agrawal.

The government announced the disbursement of Rs 2,314.20 crore to 1,297,111 depositors of Sahara Group’s Cooperative Societies as of February 28, 2025. This move comes in response to a Supreme Court mandate that necessitated the establishment of the CRCS-Sahara refund portal for claim submissions by legitimate depositors seeking the return of their investments.

The portal, active since July 18, 2023, facilitates refunds from four Sahara group entities, namely Sahara Credit Cooperative Society Ltd in Lucknow, Saharayn Universal Multipurpose Society Ltd in Bhopal, Humara India Credit Cooperative Society Ltd in Kolkata, and Stars Multipurpose Cooperative Society Ltd in Hyderabad.

Union Cooperation Minister Amit Shah assured that the refund process is thoroughly digital and devoid of paperwork, under vigilant supervision by Justice R Subhash Reddy, with assistance from Gaurav Agrawal. Verified claims are currently capped at a Rs 50,000 payout per depositor, with the extended deadline for disbursements set for December 31, 2025. A resubmission portal launched in November 2023 allows applicants to amend any identified deficiencies.
