In a recent announcement, the Indian Sugar and Bio-Energy Manufacturers Association (ISMA) has lowered its sugar production estimates for the current marketing year. The revised figures indicate a production level of 264 lakh tonnes, a decrease from prior projections.
ISMA had earlier estimated net sugar production at 272.69 lakh tonnes, factoring in substantial diversion towards ethanol production. By March 10, 2025, the reported production had reached 233.09 lakh tonnes, with 228 mills still operational.
Uttar Pradesh might see an extended crushing season due to promising cane recovery, while Maharashtra and Karnataka struggle with lower yields. The total sugar availability is anticipated to be 344 lakh tonnes, considering domestic use and exports, the closing stock is set at 54 lakh tonnes by September 2025.
