Uttarakhand's Fight Against Equine Influenza: Measures and Updates

Uttarakhand's Animal Husbandry Department, led by Secretary Dr. B.V.R.C. Purushottam, has intensified efforts to combat the Equine Influenza Virus among horses and mules on the Kedarnath route. With over 16,000 animals tested, strict measures, including bans on animals from Uttar Pradesh, aim to control the outbreak.

In response to the spread of the Equine Influenza Virus among horses and mules on the Kedarnath route, Uttarakhand's Animal Husbandry Secretary, Dr. B.V.R.C. Purushottam, has outlined the strategic measures being implemented. Under the directives of Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami and Animal Husbandry Minister Saurav Bahuguna, a comprehensive plan has been initiated to address this viral threat.

The National Equine Research Institute conducted sampling tests in Rudraprayag district, revealing infections. On April 4, over 16,000 horses and mules were tested, with 152 initially positive samples being cleared upon RT-PCR testing. Despite the measures, the virus has led to casualties among the animals, including eight deaths due to diarrhoea and five from acute colic.

A specialized team, including 22 veterinarians, is working on the ground to manage the situation. Movement of horses and mules from Uttar Pradesh is banned, and local authorities may extend restrictions to curb further infections. While the virus does not affect humans, the rapid spread among equines poses significant challenges, necessitating vigilant efforts and coordination among stakeholders.
