EU Proposes Ban on Russian Gas Imports by 2027

The European Commission has proposed a complete ban on Russian gas and liquefied natural gas imports by the end of 2027. Short-term contracts will see bans starting next year, with a full phase-out of Russian gas finalized by January 2028, aiming to end dependency on Russian energy.

In a significant move, the European Commission announced plans to ban all Russian gas and liquefied natural gas imports by the close of 2027. This proposal, introduced on Tuesday, aims to wean the EU off Russian energy dependency amid geopolitical tensions.

The blueprint suggests starting with a ban on short-term contracts as early as next year. This initial step will see all imports via short-term Russian gas deals prohibited starting January 1, 2026, according to the Commission's outlines.

By January 2028, the EU plans to terminate imports from existing long-term Russian contracts, ushering in a new era of energy independence from Russian gas sources, as highlighted by the European Commission's ambitious deadline.
