The Bhiwandi Nizampura Municipal Corporation has embarked on a noteworthy initiative by distributing eight wick-making machines to commercial sex workers. This rehabilitation effort, overseen by the civic body's social welfare department, was executed in the Hanuman Tekdi area, according to an official spokesman.

The program's primary aim is to provide a respectable and sustainable means of livelihood, enabling women and girls engaged in sex work to leave the trade and assimilate into mainstream society. BNMC administrator and commissioner Anmol Sagar spoke on the potential long-term economic independence this project could offer to the beneficiaries.

The venture includes producing 'divya phulwaris,' a type of wick that is particularly sought after during festivals, thus presenting a viable market for the initiative's participants, Sagar explained.
