Monsoon's Cooling Impact: Power Consumption Dips in June

Power consumption in India declined by 1.5% to 150.04 billion units in June 2025, compared to the previous year. The decrease is attributed to the early onset of the monsoon, which reduced the use of cooling appliances. Peak power demand also saw a decline, reflecting the cooler weather conditions.

In June, India's power consumption recorded a slight 1.5% decrease, settling at 150.04 billion units, as the monsoon season commenced earlier than expected. This decline, when compared to the previous year's figures, highlights the cooling effect of widespread rain across the nation.

According to official data, both power demand and usage of cooling appliances such as desert coolers and air conditioners saw a reduction, as June experienced less extreme temperatures. The peak power supply reached 242.49 GW, down from 244.52 GW in the same month last year.

The early arrival of the monsoon on the Kerala coast, noted on May 24, 2025, contributed significantly to the moderated demand, providing relief from the anticipated heatwave conditions that were forecasted for the summer months across many regions in India.
