Transforming Energy: India’s Massive Transmission Network Expansion
India's Parliament was informed about significant progress in the inter-state transmission system for solar and wind power, with 48 GW already installed and 159 GW under construction. The network aims to evacuate 230 GW of renewable energy. State-specific initiatives and peak demand challenges were also discussed.

India is making significant strides in renewable energy infrastructure with the development of an expansive inter-state transmission system (ISTS). As of now, 48 gigawatts (GW) of ISTS has been installed, and an additional 159 GW is actively under construction. This was disclosed to Parliament on Monday.
The network is part of a broader plan to evacuate 230 GW of solar and wind power. A 340 GW ISTS network is envisaged, with portions still under bidding or planning. The Minister of State for Power, Shripad Naik, elaborated on this in response to queries in the Rajya Sabha.
In addition, the Green Energy Corridor initiatives are advancing within several states, involving substantial investments. Notably, states have been urged to devise ten-year plans for intra-state transmission for robust renewable energy integration.
