In a compelling development, Captain Davit Vadatchkoria, the Georgian captain of the Eagle S oil tanker, stands firm in his claim of innocence regarding the undersea cable damages in the Baltic Sea in late 2024. Speaking to Finland's public broadcaster YLE, Vadatchkoria described the incident as a 'marine accident.'

The tanker, which allegedly dragged its anchor for 90 km, is said to have severely damaged power and internet lines, resulting in financial damages to the tune of 60 million euros. Finnish authorities have pressed charges of aggravated criminal mischief against the Georgian and Indian crew members involved.

The international community remains on edge, with NATO allies heightening their alert status following this and other infrastructure incidents amid ongoing geopolitical tensions since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Finnish police's response, involving special forces, has been described by Vadatchkoria as overly aggressive, akin to an anti-terror operation.
