After Diwali festivities, New Delhi is enveloped in a thick smog with its air quality deteriorating to the 'Very Poor' category. As of Tuesday morning, the Air Quality Index (AQI) registered at 350, with pollution monitoring sites predominantly marked in red. The Central Pollution Control Board's data reveals this alarming trend.

Bawana, Jahangirpuri, and Wazirpur faced 'Severe' pollution levels, reporting AQIs of 423, 407, and 408, respectively. Other areas like Anand Vihar and Ashok Vihar are not far behind, while Mumbai, Jaipur, and Lucknow are experiencing 'Poor' air quality. This situation poses a health risk for residents, especially those with pre-existing conditions.

The Supreme Court had earlier relaxed its blanket ban on fireworks, permitting green variants albeit under specific conditions. In response to the persistent pollution crisis, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has enacted Stage 2 of the Graded Response Action Plan across the National Capital Region, enforcing stringent measures to prevent further decline in air quality.

The enhanced measures include daily cleaning of roads, increased public transport frequency, and regulated use of diesel generators. Additionally, efforts are underway to manage dust, encourage public transport use, and raise public awareness through media channels to address the severe air pollution predicament.
