Diwali's Dual Impact: Firecracker Injuries and Pollution Surge in Chandigarh and Delhi

Chandigarh reports over 30 firecracker-related injuries during Diwali, with significant cases from Punjab and surrounding areas, while Delhi battles a 'very poor' air quality index post-festivities. Chandigarh is grappling with a surge in firecracker-related injuries this Diwali season, with more than 30 cases, many involving severe eye and head trauma, being treated at the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education & Research. According to Professor SS Pandav, most injuries have been documented from Punjab, Chandigarh, Mohali, and even Indore.

Speaking to ANI, Professor Pandav highlighted that the facility is bracing for additional cases as Diwali celebrations continue in several areas. He urged people to avoid high-intensity fireworks and choose safer alternatives like green crackers to prevent injuries.

In Delhi, post-Diwali air quality plummeted into the 'very poor' category with the Air Quality Index (AQI) recorded at 351, according to the Central Pollution Control Board. Health experts are warning about the heightened risk to vulnerable populations, as respiratory ailments surge with the seasonal pollution spike.
