The Rajya Sabha privileges committee convened on Monday to deliberate on a notable complaint against House member and Congress leader Jairam Ramesh, accused of consistently making disrespectful remarks about the Rajya Sabha Chairman.

Chaired by Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh, the committee assembled at the Parliamentary House Annexe extension building, with discussions beginning at 11 AM. The session aimed to review the privileges complaint filed against Jairam Ramesh, accusing him of undermining the Chairman's impartiality publicly. Plans are also in place to gather evidence from Ramesh himself.

In addition to this meeting, three other parliamentary panels convened at the Annex. The Communications and Information Technology committee examined the enforcement of media-related laws, while the Coals, Mines, and Steel Committee assessed the Steel Authority of India's performance. Meanwhile, the Chemicals and Fertilizers standing committee evaluated the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority's role concerning recent medicine price hikes.

The privileges committee consists of ten members from various political parties, tasked with examining privilege issues referred by the House or its Chairman. Should a breach be identified, the committee establishes its nature and contributing factors, ultimately presenting its recommendations to the House. These reports can lead to motions for consideration, potentially amended by any committee member as deemed suitable by the Chairman.
