Mehul Choksi, the absconding diamond trader deeply embedded in the Punjab National Bank (PNB) fraud case, encountered a significant legal setback on Friday. A special court decisively rejected his plea to halt proceedings aimed at recognizing him as a Fugitive Economic Offender (FEO).

Having been apprehended in Belgium earlier this year in April, Choksi sought relief from the special court, hoping to dismiss the Enforcement Directorate's (ED) application to label him an FEO. He argued his custody in Belgium and ongoing cases in India rendered the FEO designation unnecessary.

The ED countered, emphasizing that Choksi's refusal to submit to Indian jurisdiction, as evidenced by the extradition battle, underlined the need for the FEO status, which ultimately allows asset confiscation. Meanwhile, Belgium's judicial decision supports India’s extradition request, adding to Choksi's mounting legal woes.
