Marginal Dip in Power Consumption Amid Unseasonal Weather

Power consumption fell slightly by 0.31% in November due to decreased use of cooling appliances influenced by unseasonal rains and the onset of winter. However, peak power demand increased, and is expected to steady with rising heating appliance usage. Peak demand is forecasted to reach 277 GW in summer 2025.

In November, the country's power consumption experienced a minor decline of 0.31% to 123.4 billion units, compared to 123.79 billion units in the same month last year. This slight dip is attributed to reduced use of cooling appliances, a consequence of unseasonal rains and the advent of winter.

Government data revealed a 5.8% year-on-year decrease in power consumption for October, falling to 131.07 billion units. In contrast, September saw a rise to 145.66 billion units from the 140.61 billion units recorded the previous year. Experts indicate that reduced need for cooling appliances in autumn, combined with minimal heating device use in November, played a significant role in the consumption patterns.

Despite these fluctuations, peak power demand in November increased to 215.54 GW from 207.44 GW the previous year. May 2024 marked a record high peak of approximately 250 GW. Predictions suggest that as temperatures drop, power demand may stabilize and potentially reach an estimated 277 GW by summer 2025.
