German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul is preparing to tackle pressing trade issues, notably rare earths and steel, during his forthcoming visit to China. With China serving as both a top trading partner and a major competitor for Germany, Wadephul's mission underscores Berlin's delicate balancing act.
Originally planned for October, Wadephul's trip was deferred due to Beijing's delay in confirming proposed meetings. As trade tensions between Brussels and Beijing escalate, particularly in chips, minerals, and electric vehicles, Wadephul aims to address these pivotal economic matters.
Wadephul also hopes to persuade China to use its leverage over Russia to aid peace efforts in Ukraine. Europe's dependency on Chinese semiconductors and rare earths, along with the impact of cheap Asian steel imports, remains a cause for concern, prompting Brussels to impose quotas to protect local industries.
