In a bid to quell rising tensions, Delhi University announced a month-long prohibition on public meetings and protests starting Tuesday. The decision emerges amidst chaos stirred by opposition to new University Grants Commission (UGC) guidelines, which the Supreme Court recently stalled, citing a lack of clarity and potential for misuse.

The university's Proctor referenced concerns over campus safety and public order in issuing the directive. The notification highlighted that unregulated gatherings could disrupt traffic, threaten lives, and disturb peace, recalling past instances where failed control led to widespread disorder and lawlessness on university premises.

The prohibition encompasses rallies, dharnas, public meetings, and agitations, along with restrictions on hazardous materials and activities affecting public tranquility or traffic flow. University officials urged students and faculty to prioritize harmony and avoid actions that exacerbate discord amid accusations and counteraccusations of violence between student groups.
