Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has voiced profound indignation over a recent physical assault targeting two individuals from Manipur and Assam in the vicinity of Delhi's Saket Court. The Chief Minister condemned the attack as an egregious act of racial bullying and called on authorities to enforce stringent measures to prevent recurrent aggressions against people from the Northeast.
In a social media post, Sangma stated, "I am angered by the repeated attacks on North East people in Mainland India. The physical assault on our compatriots from Manipur and Assam near Saket Court, Delhi, is appalling. Racial bullying cannot become the new normal, and immediate action is necessary."
In a related incident, a young woman from Manipur was allegedly assaulted near the Saket District Court Complex on Sunday evening. Whilst walking in a park with friends, a group of men directed inappropriate remarks towards them. As tensions escalated, violence erupted when the woman objected, leading to her assault by the group.
The victim has been hospitalized at Safdarjung Hospital, where her condition is being monitored, though she is expected to recover shortly from minor injuries. An investigation is currently underway by the police, who have reached out to her regarding the incident.
In an earlier case from February 25, individuals accused of racial abuse and intimidation against three women from Arunachal Pradesh in New Delhi's Malviya Nagar were remanded to judicial custody. This incident, which took place on February 20, involved verbal and mental harassment without resulting physical harm. The investigation is under the oversight of a high-ranking officer and invokes relevant legal provisions, including the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
