Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi is pressing for a parliamentary debate on the rampant disruption in Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) supply, stressing that the nation is feeling the squeeze of inflation, unemployment, and the recent spike in cylinder costs. According to her, a parliamentary discussion could spotlight critical public issues, which she attributes to missteps in government policies.
In the backdrop of the ongoing turmoil in West Asia, the Indian government has hiked cooking LPG cylinder prices by Rs 60, propelling non-subsidized prices to Rs 913 in Delhi, Rs 939 in Kolkata, Rs 912 in Mumbai, and Rs 928 in Chennai, with state-imposed taxes causing variations.
Various MPs have echoed the call for a debate on these price hikes. CPI MP P Sandosh Kumar has submitted a suspension of business notice in the Rajya Sabha to discuss the cylinder shortages affecting citizens during this global energy crisis. The Union government has responded by prioritizing domestic LPG supply under the Essential Commodities Act, ensuring essential services and households are prioritized over commercial needs.
