Brazil's former president, Jair Bolsonaro, embarked on an essential shoulder surgery this morning, aiming to address a chronic issue causing persistent pain and limiting mobility. The procedure is expected to last approximately five hours, with two dedicated to preparatory measures.

Bolsonaro has been under humanitarian house arrest, a term granted on medical grounds, as he navigates several health challenges. He was previously convicted of coup attempts following a narrow defeat in the 2022 presidential election to Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

In confirming the surgery, Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes ruled that only Bolsonaro's wife, Michelle Bolsonaro, could be present at the hospital. The court suspended all other visits, including from lawyers and family members, unless explicitly authorized.
