Tamil Nadu's newly unveiled 'Illatharasi' scheme is set to empower nearly 2 crore homemakers with Rs 8,000 coupons for household appliances, as announced by Minister P Geetha Jeevan on Saturday. This pioneering initiative will provide women the autonomy to select appliances of their choice, such as washing machines, TVs, or refrigerators, marking a shift from receiving pre-selected brands from the government.
The scheme is deemed a "smart economic multiplier" by the minister, aiming to resuscitate local retail markets and recycling industries by encouraging the exchange of old appliances. The strategic move is expected to bolster regional economies by redirecting procurement to small-scale local vendors and reducing reliance on large corporations.
Jeevan emphasizes the scheme's potential to ease domestic burdens and enhance self-reliance and confidence among women, reflecting the DMK's Dravidian ideals of gender equality. As a decisive measure in the upcoming April 23 polls, the 'Illatharasi' initiative is touted as a game-changer that could secure a strong mandate for the DMK-led alliance.
