On Friday, the national capital of Delhi was greeted with an unexpected shift in climate as heavy rains swept across various areas, offering much-needed relief from the oppressive summer heat. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) Regional Meteorological Centre in New Delhi, in its April 17, 2026 bulletin, predicted a brief spell of atmospheric instability before a return to high temperatures.

The IMD anticipates generally cloudy skies with light rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds traveling at speeds of 30 to 40 kmph over the National Capital Region (NCR) into the night of April 17. However, this reprieve will be short-lived, as partly cloudy skies from April 18 to April 19 are expected to clear completely between April 20 and April 23, with temperatures fluctuating between 39°C and 42°C.

IMD scientist Dr. Shashi Kant highlighted a western disturbance affecting states like Jammu-Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand with potential thunderstorms and rain. Meanwhile, the plains, including Delhi, will experience only slight cloud cover and minimal precipitation. Residents are advised to minimize sun exposure and remain hydrated to safeguard against rising temperatures and moderate health risks.
