Dairy Revolution: India's Milk Production Soars Under Modi Era
India's dairy and livestock sector has seen substantial growth since 2014, as milk production increased by 70%. Home Minister Amit Shah highlighted the sector's transformation during an event, emphasizing improvements in milk availability and cooperative expansion. These initiatives aim to enhance nutrition and bolster the rural economy, especially in Ladakh.
India's livestock and dairy sector has witnessed a remarkable transformation, according to Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Speaking at a recent event, Shah detailed the strides made since Prime Minister Narendra Modi's tenure began in 2014, with milk production soaring by 70% over the past decade. This impressive growth, Shah noted, is largely attributed to the creation of a dedicated Animal Husbandry Department and numerous revolutionary changes.
Significant numbers underscore the sector's progress, with milk production rising from 143 million tonnes in 2014-15 to an estimated 248 million tonnes in 2024-25. The per capita milk availability has also improved substantially, emphasizing milk's vital role in the nutritional needs of children. 'Pasteurised milk is crucial for children's nutrition,' Shah stated, expressing hope for Ladakh to reach the national average of 485 grams per day.
Shah highlighted the expansion of India's cooperative network, showcasing the establishment of over 21,000 new dairy cooperative societies, with ambitions to form 75,000 within five years. Additionally, modernization plans are in place for 46,000 existing societies. Emphasizing potential opportunities, Shah encouraged Ladakh's administration to explore livestock rearing and cooperative-based development, which could boost farmers' incomes and support sustainable rural development.
