Chemists and Druggists Nationwide Strike Calls for Government Action Against E-Pharmacy Practices

The All India Organisation of Chemists and Druggists (AIOCD) plans a nationwide shutdown on May 20, 2026, citing government inaction on regulatory issues, notably concerning e-pharmacy practices. They argue these practices risk 50 million livelihoods and compromise patient safety. Further action is promised if demands aren't met.

The All India Organisation of Chemists and Druggists (AIOCD), representing 12.40 lakh chemists and drug distributors, announced a nationwide strike on May 20, 2026. This action comes as a response to the government's inaction towards critical issues plaguing the pharmaceutical trade, sparking widespread discontent among chemists.

A memorandum submitted to Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlights key concerns, including the unregulated growth of e-pharmacy platforms. The AIOCD alleges these platforms exploit regulatory loopholes, offering deep discounts that threaten around 50 million dependent livelihoods and foster unfair competition, especially harming small, rural pharmacists.

The AIOCD demands the withdrawal of temporary COVID-era notifications that relax Drug Rule 65's provisions. They urge for a "level playing field" policy to prevent the damaging practices of large corporate entities. Without decisive government action by the proposed strike date, the AIOCD warns of an indefinite agitation.
