The Indian government has given the green light to a groundbreaking $2.8 billion rail project aimed at transforming regional connectivity. Approved by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs and led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, this endeavour plans to link Ahmedabad with Dholera via a semi high-speed rail line, cutting travel time to just 48 minutes.
In a press release, the committee detailed the project's scale, underscoring its use of indigenous technology over a 134-km stretch. The initiative will bolster daily commutes and facilitate same-day return trips between Ahmedabad and significant locations like the forthcoming Dholera Airport and the Lothal National Maritime Heritage Complex. It's a move expected to unite not just cities but communities separated by hundreds of kilometres.
Marking its debut in India's rail history, the semi-high-speed line will serve as a model for future projects aiming for a pan-India network of fast trains. The rail plan aligns with Prime Minister Modi's vision of nurturing a self-reliant 'New India' through multi-modal connectivity under the PM-Gati Shakti National Master Plan, optimizing logistics and stakeholder collaboration.
