Onions of Wrath: Farmers Protest Unfair Procurement Prices

The announcement, made by Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, comes against the backdrop of plummeting onion prices influenced by global political tensions affecting exports.

The Maharashtra State Onion Growers Association (MSOGA) has criticized the announced rate, stating it falls short of covering production costs that have surged due to increased expenses in seeds, labour, and fertilizers. They demand a minimum price of Rs 3,000 per quintal and have threatened protests if their demands are not met.

MSOGA's Bharat Dighole highlighted the contrast between current prices and those set in 2023, urging the government to revise its decision. The association demands compensation for affected farmers and calls for anti-corruption measures in procurement processes to ensure fair treatment for onion growers who play a critical role in India's food security.
