Political Tensions Soar as FIR Targets TMC's Abhishek Banerjee

In West Bengal, a heated political conflict has emerged following the filing of a First Information Report (FIR) against Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee. The FIR, lodged on May 15, accuses Banerjee of making provocative and inflammatory speeches during the recent 2026 Assembly election campaign, stirring political unrest.

On Saturday, veteran TMC MP Saugata Roy vehemently defended Banerjee, arguing that the allegations are politically motivated and lack substance. He criticized the FIR as an act of political vendetta, asserting that no offensive content was present in Banerjee's speech and predicting legal action in response.

Party colleague Dola Sen expressed confidence in the TMC's stance, emphasizing the importance of public opinion and justice. She highlighted that the ultimate verdict will reside with truth and the public, pointing out the party's resilience in the face of legal scrutiny.

The FIR details complaints by Rajib Sarkar, alleging that Banerjee's speeches, particularly those in rallies across Maheshtala, Arambagh, Haringhata, and Nandigram, incited violence and disrupted public tranquility. The case cites violations under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Representation of the People Act.

Additionally, West Bengal Minister Dilip Ghosh criticized TMC leadership, calling their past behavior tyrannical and suggesting that people are now willing to challenge such actions. Ghosh emphasized that justice will prevail with police readiness to act on complaints. (ANI)
