In recognition of his outstanding contributions to public affairs and internal security, revered IPS officer K. Vijay Kumar will be bestowed with the Padma Shri award. The prestigious honor will be conferred upon him during the first Investiture Ceremony of the Padma Awards 2026, to be held at Rashtrapati Bhavan on May 25, where President Droupadi Murmu will officiate the ceremony.
Renowned for his leadership in critical anti-Naxal and anti-terror operations, notably the operation against notorious bandit Veerappan, Kumar played a critical role in advancing police training and operational strategies across India. His illustrious career across various security forces underscores his unwavering commitment to ensuring national security and public safety.
Vijay Kumar is celebrated for his expertise in team-building for high-risk missions, including the introduction of advanced shooting practices for IPS officers. His academic and professional journey is marked by an impressive array of degrees and a lifelong dedication to the Indian Police Service since his initial appointment in 1975. His early tenure as Superintendent of Police in Tamil Nadu was characterized by decisive actions against Naxalism and organized crime.
Kumar's distinguished service extended internationally as part of the Special Protection Group assigned to protect Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, and later contributed significantly to safeguarding high-profile figures like Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa.
