A 47-year-old woman was severely injured after a leopard pounced on her in a village here on Sunday evening, officials said.

The victim, identified as Vineeta Devi, was performing daily chores when she was attacked by the big cat around 6.30 pm in the village outskirts.

Hearing her screams, her husband Kishore Kumar and local villagers rushed to the spot, causing the leopard to flee into the nearby forest.

Devi sustained deep teeth wounds on her neck and shoulder, along with severe claw injuries on her back, officials said.

Family members and villagers rushed the injured woman to a hospital in Srinagar where she is undergoing treatment.

The incident triggered panic and anger among locals, with many alleging a rise in leopard attack incidents.

Villagers demanded immediate installation of a cage and increased patrolling in the area to prevent future attacks.

Pauri Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Mahatim Yadav said a forest department team reached the spot immediately after receiving information.

We are monitoring the area and have appealed to residents to remain alert, he said.
