Amidst a legal battle, Niji Sapra, a former board member of the Delhi Gymkhana Club, has called on its members to trust the government's intentions while fiercely advocating for the club's preservation. The controversy stems from a government directive issued on May 22, requesting the club to relinquish control of its premises by June 5, citing a 1928 lease provision that allows for repossession should the land be needed for public purposes.

In a statement to ANI, Sapra emphasized the importance of assembling a robust defense to protect the club, which she has served and hopes to continue serving in the future. She urged members not to immediately question governmental motives, acknowledging potential security concerns. Nonetheless, she remains confident that through proper legal channels, the club can be retained.

Legal proceedings are progressing, with the Delhi High Court summoning the Centre and the club's management as a response to civil suits from club members challenging the repossession directive. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta clarified that the communication was not tantamount to an eviction order, assuring that any future proceedings would comply with legal processes. The Court, satisfied with this assurance, opted not to offer interim relief at this point.
