In a significant move to boost efficiency, Indian Railways has sanctioned a project to upgrade the existing 1x25 kV electric traction system to a modern 2x25 kV system on the vital Mahbubnagar-Secunderabad-Medchal section of the South Central Railway. The ambitious Rs 285.01 crore project aims to enhance operations over the 141-kilometre stretch, according to a release.

This initiative is part of broader efforts by Indian Railways to enhance capacity across busy rail corridors in India. The new traction system promises a more stable power supply, improving the reliability and safety of trains. Positioned on the high-density Dharmavaram-Dhone-Mahbubnagar-Secunderabad-Medchal-Mudkhed-Indore-Ajmer corridor, this upgrade is crucial for accommodating significant passenger and freight traffic.

Upon completion, the project is expected to streamline freight movement and augment goods transportation's speed and capacity, subsequently bolstering trade and economic activities in the region. Meanwhile, Indian Railways has also approved the doubling of the 10.65-km Mararikulam-Alappuzha line to improve line capacity and operational efficiency on the bustling Ernakulam-Kayankulam corridor.
