EU Sanctions Shake Up Strait of Hormuz Tensions
The European Union has sanctioned two Iranian individuals and a unit of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps for threatening maritime freedom in the Strait of Hormuz. This is the first time the EU has used its powers to sanction Iran for restricting navigation, marking a significant geopolitical move.
The European Union has taken decisive action by imposing sanctions on two Iranian individuals and a unit of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps for posing threats to maritime freedom in the critical Strait of Hormuz. This strategic waterway is vital, with around a fifth of the world's oil passing through it.
The sanctions add the Hormozgan Provincial Command of the IRGC Navy, Deputy Commander Mohammad Akbarzadeh, and Hamid Hosseini of Iran's Oil, Gas, and Petrochemical Products Exporters’ Union to the EU's list. In response, Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister dismissed the sanctions as political and vowed to uphold control over the strait.
EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas announced this move marks the first use of the EU's new navigation freedom regime, stating that sanctions will be applied again if needed. The EU’s strategy aims to counter actions that disrupt transit through this key maritime passage.
