The family of Indian seafarer Shivanand Chaurasia is grappling with the tragic news of his death, one of the three casualties in a drone assault on the Palau-flagged tanker MT Settebello near the Strait of Hormuz. The attack left relatives and neighbors of the Deoria district-residing sailor in deep despair as they received confirmation of the grim event.
Chaurasia's brother-in-law, Sanjay Chaurasia, mentioned that the family had a conversation shortly before the tragedy struck. 'We spoke in the evening before the incident; he was on an Iranian ship but said nothing suspicious,' he shared. The incident signifies a bitter blow as Shivanand was the family's sole breadwinner, striving to enhance their living conditions.
Efforts continue to establish what transpired during the attack. According to Manoj Yadav, General Secretary of the Forward Seamen's Union of India, communication with the vessel remains disrupted. Meanwhile, India's Embassy in Oman, along with the Ministry of External Affairs, is closely monitoring the situation and coordinating rescue and de-escalation efforts amid increasing regional conflict tensions.
