Ghana is going to welcome the President of the Seventy-third Session of the United Nations General Assembly María Fernanda Espinosa Garcés who is scheduled to have an official visit to the West African country between May 8 and 11.

The visit of María Fernanda Espinosa Garcés is expected to boost political support and cooperation with the United Nations General Assembly. She will be having bilateral meetings with Ghana’s Head of State, Nana Akufo-Addo, Speaker of the Parliament, Aaron Mike Oquaye and the Leadership of Parliament the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Hon Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey (MP), the High-Level Ministerial Committee on SDGs, representatives of civil society and UN officials. She will also pay a courtesy call on the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II in Manhyia, Kumasi, as reported by GhanaWeb.

Her visit will highlight the leadership role and support of Ghana in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda. It is also intended to emphasize the importance of strengthening the multilateral system as the best option for responding to global crises and challenges.

Espinosa Garcés will address the role of parliaments in building political will for the implementation of global commitments crucial for effective responses to climate change, maintenance of peace and security, the changing world of work and strengthening of social protection systems, reducing inequalities, among others, to achieve the SDGs.

The theme of the current session of the United Nations General Assembly is “Making the UN Relevant to All; Global Leadership and shared Responsibilities for Peaceful, Equitable and Sustainable Societies.”

She is also expected to visit historical sites including Cape Coast Castle and Centre For National Culture Kumasi.
