A major gas leak has been reported at San Diego Zoo in Balboa Park that led to the evacuation of nearby areas. The leak was reported to be near the main entrance of the zoo. San Diego Fire-Rescue Department has sent its two crews and a battalion chief on the scene and they are working with Zoo staff.

A gas main break was reported at 8:11 am at 2920 Zoo Drive, officials said. That is the location of the main entrance to the San Diego Zoo. The zoo will open to the public but the entrance is rerouted to another side of the property. The Park Blvd entrance is closed to the public.

Zoo employees were moved to the War Memorial Building. The animals are not evacuated but it has been reported that where the leak is it is not affecting the animals. The zoo sent a message announcing the following areas were evacuated: Wegeforth Bowl, Dickinson Center, Gift shops, Reptile House, Tiger River, and Treetops and the Benchley Building.

The construction area is the hot zone which is being kept clear.

People have been advised to avoid the area if possible.
