Munich airport security breach: Offender detained; all terminals reopened

Munich Airport has reportedly closed some of its terminals because a person has likely entered through an emergency exit door without passing through the passenger control. The international airport tweeted Tuesday morning that Terminal 2 and parts of Terminal 1 have been closed for police operations.

Federal police said that preventive measures are ongoing at the airport and delays are expected due to the security breach. Passenger checks at Module B/C of T2 and T1 have been closed for now.

Munich airport is one of Germany's busiest aviation hubs and the current shut down and delays due to this security breach that comes during the peak travel season. Lufthansa alone operates hundreds of flights through Munich every day and around 130,000 passengers pass through daily.

Up to 5,000 passengers were affected by the disruption as federal police searched for the unnamed person. Several flights were delayed and the affected passengers, who had already been through security checks for their departing flights, had to go through the process again.

Last summer, some 330 flights were canceled in Munich when a woman entered a "clean area" of the airport without going through security checks.

Update 1: Munich airport authorities said that the access to Terminal 2 has been blocked keeping in view the security situation. Module B and C of T1 have also been closed.

Water is being distributed to stranded passengers and air conditioning systems are being boosted.

Update 2: Federal police has said that the person who entered the airport through an emergency exit door is in custody but police measures at the airport are still in progress.

Update 3: Federal police has reopened affected areas of Terminal 1 but access to Terminal 2 is still restricted.

Update 4: All terminals have been reopened by the federal police after completing risk control measures. Passengers can contact their airlines for an update about their flights.
