EU Imposes Sanctions on Israeli Individuals and Entities
The European Union implemented sanctions against five Israeli individuals and three entities for serious human rights abuses against Palestinians. These measures include asset freezes and travel bans under the EU Global Human Rights Sanctions Regime. Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich condemned the sanctions, calling them undemocratic interventions.
The European Union announced sanctions on Monday against five Israeli individuals and three entities, accusing them of serious and systematic human rights abuses against Palestinians in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.
The sanctions list features Tzav 9, a group known for obstructing humanitarian aid to Gaza, as well as Ben-Zion Gopstein, leader of Lehava, and Isaschar Manne, founder of an unauthorized West Bank outpost. Both figures, along with Tzav 9, have also faced U.S. sanctions for opposing Jewish assimilation and agitating against Arabs.
Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich criticized the EU's actions, deeming the sanctions an undemocratic intervention that threatens freedom of expression and protest in Israel. He called the measures an unacceptable step between allied nations and advocated for their cancellation.
The EU's Global Human Rights Sanctions Regime enforces the new sanctions, including asset freezes and travel bans. To date, 113 individuals and 31 entities from various countries have been sanctioned under this regime.
