In response to the detection of the Nipah virus in Kerala, the Tamil Nadu government has ramped up health surveillance in bordering districts. Health officials have been instructed to screen all symptomatic cases of the Nipah virus using protective equipment to prevent the spread of the infection.
The advisory from the Director of Public Health emphasized the need for vigilance, especially in districts like Kozhikode and Malappuram where a boy recently died from the virus. Surveillance of Acute Encephalitis Syndrome is also being intensified in these areas.
Both government and private hospitals have been alerted about the outbreak. Health teams are deployed at border check-posts round-the-clock to screen symptomatic individuals, particularly in districts such as Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Theni, Tenkasi, and Kanniyakumari. The advisory highlighted that the Nipah virus has no known treatment or vaccine and reiterated the importance of intensive supportive care.
