The initial autopsy of the post-graduate trainee doctor, whose body was found at a state-run hospital here on Friday, indicated that she was murdered after being sexually assaulted, police said.

It also ruled out suicide, they said, adding that a case has now been registered at the Tala Police Station.

A senior officer of Kolkata Police said the crime took place between 3-6 am. 'This is definitely not a case of suicide; the woman was murdered following sexual assault,' he told PTI. The autopsy report showed injury marks on various parts of the body, including the neck, left leg, right hand, and face.

Authorities have formed a Special Investigation Team to probe the crime. Meanwhile, the hospital staff and student associations are demanding a swift and transparent investigation, while opposition leaders call for an independent probe.
