Doctors and nurses of a state-run hospital in West Bengal's Purba Bardhaman district held a demonstration on Saturday, following an incident where a patient threatened a woman medic over delayed treatment. The patient, who was inebriated, entered the emergency ward of Bhatar State General Hospital and warned the lady doctor she would face consequences similar to a trainee medic in Kolkata.
The warning follows the grim discovery of a woman doctor's body in a north Kolkata hospital's seminar hall. Preliminary autopsy reports confirmed she had suffered sexual abuse prior to being killed.
A health official from Purba Bardhaman stated, “The patient threatened the attending doctor with similar treatment to what occurred at R G Kar Hospital in Kolkata. Despite the threat, the doctor continued her duty, later discussing the incident with colleagues. The medical staff demanded the man's punishment and increased security for health workers.” The accused, Susanta Roy, a civic volunteer with the local police, has been arrested, confirmed a senior police official.
