Resident doctors in Maharashtra initiated an indefinite strike on Tuesday, disrupting elective procedures and outpatient department (OPD) services in public hospitals. The move is in solidarity with nationwide protests over the alleged rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
The Maharashtra State Association of Residential Doctors (Central MARD) confirmed that while elective services have ceased, emergency services will remain uninterrupted. Dr. Pratik Debaje, Central MARD president, stated, "From 9 am, we stopped work at all OPDs and elective services have been stopped. Now, only emergency services are operational across the state."
The shocking incident at the Kolkata medical facility has spurred widespread outrage. Junior doctors and healthcare workers are demanding swift justice and better security. Central MARD's demands include an impartial investigation, enhanced security measures, quality living accommodations, and the speedy implementation of the Central Healthcare Protection Act.
