Healthcare services across West Bengal were severely disrupted on Saturday as doctors united in a 24-hour strike to protest the alleged rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor. The strike, called by the Indian Medical Association (IMA), was supported by senior doctors from both public and private facilities, joining junior doctors who have been on strike for eight days.
Concurrently, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) questioned Dr. Sandip Ghosh, former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, in connection with the case. The body of the trainee doctor was found in a seminar hall of the state-run hospital on August 9. Ghosh was interrogated about the hospital's response to the death and was seen returning to the CBI office on Saturday for further questioning.
Separate CBI teams visited the crime scene at RG Kar hospital and the barracks where the prime accused, civic volunteer Sanjay Roy, was residing. The state government has also announced measures to enhance women's safety at workplaces, especially in state-run hospitals. The strike has affected routine outpatient services at both government and private hospitals, though emergency services remain operational.
