The Raksha Bandhan festival took on extraordinary significance for a 43-year-old woman from South Goa this year. Her younger brother provided a unique gift: a kidney, potentially saving her life.
The woman, who was suffering from polycystic kidney disease, underwent the transplant in April at a private hospital. Although the identities of the siblings remain confidential at the family’s request, their story shines as an inspiration to potential organ donors.
''My wife was very emotional when she tied her rakhi to her brother. Since childhood, they have shared a special bond,'' remarked the woman's husband. The nephrologist at the private hospital explained that the patient’s condition was critical, necessitating an urgent transplant. The younger brother, who is already married, was willing to undergo the procedure. Post-treatment for kidney stones and mandatory approvals, the donation was successfully conducted using laparoscopic surgery.
