The Supreme Court on Tuesday made a fervent plea to doctors protesting nationwide over the alleged rape and killing of a Kolkata doctor to call off their strike and return to work.
Highlighting the impact on underserved segments requiring medical care, the court emphasized that ensuring doctors' safety and protection is a matter of highest national concern. 'We have not left the matter to the high court because it affects healthcare nationwide,' said Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud, leading a three-judge bench.
The apex court is currently addressing a suo-motu case related to the tragic incident involving a postgraduate trainee doctor from R G Kar Medical College in Kolkata. The Federation of Resident Doctors' Association has welcomed the Supreme Court’s intervention, noting its positive implications for the medical community. Urging the striking doctors to return to their duties, the court assured them of its commitment to addressing their safety concerns.
