The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has initiated an investigation into two severe cases of food poisoning reported in Andhra Pradesh, which have led to significant health complications among students and orphans.
The alarming incidents, occurring at Chittoor Apollo Health University and an orphanage in Anakapalli district, have garnered national attention due to their severe consequences.
According to sources, 70 students at Chittoor Apollo Health University became seriously ill after consuming contaminated food, with all affected individuals receiving treatment at Chittoor Government Hospital.
Separately, three children succumbed, and 37 others fell ill following a food poisoning episode at an orphanage in Anakapalli district.
The affected orphans are currently undergoing treatment in various hospitals across Anakapalli and Vishakhapatnam.
In a statement released on Friday, the NHRC expressed profound concern over the alleged negligence in maintaining food safety and quality, describing the incidents as possible human rights violations if the media reports hold true.
Consequently, the NHRC has issued notices to the chief secretary and the director general of police, demanding comprehensive reports on the incidents within a fortnight.
The requested report should comprise details on the status of the FIRs filed, the current health condition of the victims, and preventative measures planned or implemented.
