On Congenital Heart Defect (CHD) Awareness Day, Central Coalfields Limited (CCL) and Northern Coalfields Limited (NCL), subsidiaries of Coal India Limited (CIL), signed separate Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with Sri Sathya Sai Health & Education Trust (SSSHET) to provide life-saving surgeries for children suffering from CHD under the 'Nanha Sa Dil' initiative. The signing ceremony took place at Shastri Bhawan, New Delhi, in the presence of senior dignitaries and officials from the Ministry of Coal (MoC).
The MoUs were signed by Shri SS Lal, GM (CSR), CCL, and Shri Rajeev Ranjan, GM (CSR), NCL, representing their respective companies, while Shri Vivek Gour, Trustee, signed on behalf of SSSHET. The event was attended by Shri Vikram Dev Dutt, Secretary (Coal), MoC, Ms. Rupinder Brar, Additional Secretary, MoC, Ms. Santosh, DDG, MoC, and Dr. C. Sreenivas, Chairman, SSSHET, among other notable officials. Additionally, Shri PM Prasad, Chairman, CIL, Dr. Vinay Ranjan, Director (P&IR), CIL, and other senior leaders from CIL and its subsidiaries joined virtually.
During his address, Shri Vikram Dev Dutt praised the initiative, stating, "These MoUs will yield goodwill equity for Coal India and its subsidiaries in the coming years. I am truly touched by this event that will transform society." He highlighted CIL's ongoing commitment to impactful CSR projects that promote sustainable and inclusive growth, especially in mining states.
Under the 'Nanha Sa Dil' initiative, CCL will conduct screenings for 45,000 children in Jharkhand, with life-saving surgeries planned for 500 children diagnosed with CHD. Concurrently, NCL will organize 345 grassroots-level screening camps to screen 17,250 children, referring identified cases for Echo analysis and further treatment at NCL Bina Hospital.
Since the project's launch on March 7, 2024, over 250 children have received life-saving CHD surgeries. With the expansion to include CCL, NCL, and SECL, the initiative aims to cover multiple states and benefit more families. Over the next three years, CIL and its subsidiaries are committed to saving over 2,000 lives through this initiative, marking a significant milestone for any Public Sector Unit (PSU) in India.
CIL has invested Rs. 1,673 crores in healthcare, education, and rural development over the last three years. Notably, 90% of the CSR expenditure is directed towards operational states, with 10% supporting PAN-India projects that uplift underprivileged communities.
The 'Nanha Sa Dil' initiative addresses a critical healthcare gap: currently, only 5% of the 2.40 lakh children born annually with CHD in India receive surgery due to prohibitive costs. By partnering with SSSHET, CIL is working to bridge this gap and offer hope to countless families.
This initiative exemplifies CIL's mission to contribute to nation-building while positively impacting lives and delivering the precious gift of health and life to children in need.
